The Red Planet Prize started in 2007 initially as an annual TV writing scheme. Over the last few years, it’s become more of a biannual event. This is due to its growing epic scale and the scheme’s commitment to ongoing mentoring/development with its selected writers. It’s yielded a lot of success: Robert Thorogood’s Death In Paradise was developed via the scheme, and many of the its writers have achieved their first TV credits and/or are now TV regulars.
It’s very gratifying to be part of the Prize (I was involved in its creation, and am one of the readers/judges), and Tony Jordan and his team have taken it to a whole new level with their unique industry access, and their passionate commitment to helping new writers. Now it’s back once again, bigger and better than ever, to open its development doors and kickstart people’s careers.
The competition works like this: you send in the first ten pages of a 60 minute TV script (along with a half-page description of how the series will work and a brief personal biog no more than half a page), and if we like it, then we request to see the full script. If we like that, we invite you in for a chat (sometimes there’s a whole ‘industry day’), and then a winner is chosen. You get £5000 for your trouble, and a development deal with Red Planet to push your idea/script further. SOUNDS GREAT. What’s the catch? How much is it to enter?
